The Japanese pull-apart erasers are flying off the shelves! Who would have thought that these sweet little things would be such a hit? Luckily Paper Caper has a huge stock of these, so if you are looking for the erasers, come and visit us!
Hamsters, sushi, dogs & other tiny trinkets are a fun stocking stuffer for the kids. Reasonably priced, these funny erasers from across the pond are being traded, collected, and played with at school, home & play dates all over Portland!
The company that manufactures these rubberized replicas of food, animals & other items is IWAKO.
The Managing Director gave most of the credit for the idea to the
company’s president Yoshikazu Iwasawa (above) and said President Iwasawa
questioned why erasers were always rectangular. They are a dedicated bunch, too! Judging from the popularity of these
little gizmos, their diligence shines through. "Every day, we think
about erasers,” says Iwasawa. “When we eat, when
we shop, in everything we do, we look and think: ‘Can this be an
eraser?’ The ideas must come from somewhere.” Imagine! Just pondering an item as simple as an eraser led to the popularity of this item! Makes us wonder what other mundane objects could be turned into fabulous toys!
President Iwasawa went on to explore the possibilities further, always looking for items that could be made into erasers - they produce about 20 new designs each year... And the pull-apart design came about due to the inability of IWAKO to spray-paint their erasers. Incredible - they simply didn't have the technology at that time! So President Iwasawa developed the erasers with each color being a different part - and the pull apart eraser was born!
The quality of the product is also of utmost importance to IWAKO: “Children like our erasers because they represent
real things. We spare no effort in making them as real as possible
because kids only accept products that are good enough for adults as
well..."
